World Oceans Day at Kona Brewing Co.

Kona Brewing Company has enjoyed an association with ocean sports since its early days as a small microbrewery in Kona. Next weekend, the Hawaii Kai restaurant and brewpub will help continue Ocean research by donating a portion of profits to Waikiki Aquarium.  Hear GM Eron Reid talk with Jo about how you can help.
World Oceans Day is June 8th, and festivities kick off with two separate beach clean-ups hosted by the Waikiki Aquarium and Duke’s Waikiki at Kaimana Beach and Waimanalo Beach, respectively.  NOAA Pacific Services will also be on site at the Waikiki Aquarium throughout the day, offering kid-friendly activities such as “NOAA’s Honua,” a science sphere offering data visualizations on oceans and climate; and “Oceans Today,” a kiosk presenting video vignettes from oceans around the world.
“The Waikiki Aquarium is pleased to take the lead in Hawaii in celebrating World Oceans Day,” said Director Andrew Rossiter, Ph.D. “World Oceans Day provides an opportunity to get directly involved in protecting our future and raising consciousness of how our lives depend on the ocean.”
At Kona Brewing Company Koko Marina Brewpub, there are new dishes on the menu and lots of enthusiasm for World Oceans Day.
“In 2008 we donated over $75,000 to community projects,” says GM Eron Reid “We’re happy to be a part of World Ocean’s Day.”
James Vines, executive chef suggests his triple layered poke dish as one guests might try on June 8th. “Our “Aloha Tower is three layers of poke,” he says. “Spiced tobiko poke on the first layer, then a second layer of honey wasabi with black sesame seeds poke and the  third layer is more traditional sesame shoyu poke.”
Or try the fresh fish. “We often have charter boats pull up over here at the marina and ask if we need any fish,” says James.  “It’s one of the advantages of being close to the ocean.”
